This time, Axel’s sudden words surprised Roxas, who looked at him.
“Hey, don’t look at me like that.”
Axel turned away from Roxas and took a bite out of his ice-cream. Roxas didn’t know of Axel’s dilemma. Axel didn’t know of Roxas’ dilemma.
“……We may not always be together… huh…” said Roxas.
“We’ve got to make lots of memories,” laughed Axel.
“What are you on about?” asked Roxas, laughing along.
Can beings without hearts have memories?
“Nah, it’s just…”
It’s just… it’s just that, even though Axel didn’t have a heart, he felt something in his chest when he thought that Roxas might be going away.
“Memories… huh…” mumbled Roxas to himself as he gazed at the setting sun.
Next to him, Axel took a bite out of his ice-cream, and he too stared into the sunset.

Axel’s an adult (has to be in the mid- to late-20’s, based on how he’s drawn compared to younger characters.) Roxas is 14 (or 15 by the time KH2 starts.)
That means, if Axel actually liked Roxas in *that* way, he’d be a pedophile.
Which means, AxelxRoxas is about as far from a “canon” relationship as you can get, no matter how many deranged fangirls believe otherwise… seriously, fangirls who want to fantasize about two guys doing something should just stick with SoraxRiku.

Hey, it could be worse. Look at all the Ansem/Riku stuff out there. *shudders* (I leave Riku out of it and pair Ansem with Sephiroth, anyway. They’re in the same /age group/, at the very least…)
I peg Axel at early twenties; definitely not over 25. He kind of has that ‘college kid’ mentality…he can be serious if called upon and knows how to get his job done, but in his interactions with Roxas, he tends to cut loose and be more open about his pseudo-feelings. Also, you cite the style; Riku is only 16 and seems to be drawn in a more mature style. Leon isn’t more than 20, either (especially when you consider the fact that the FF characters tend to look younger than their in-game counterparts).
But I don’t look to AkuRoku for anything beyond cute, fluffy little feel-good moments like them eating ice cream and Roxas blushing, anyway.

Well now i know what i need to buy when i get my wages anyways i thought in KH2 it was pretty clear what Roxas’ and Axel’s relationship was like in the past and now ima try a figure this out…who do all the nobodies belong too…because if you look at some like Roxas get rid of the x and rearrange it then bam you got Sora and Xemnas do the same and you got Ansem so ima carry on my search

Also i think that Axel’s saying “got it memorized” is a way of showing that he still has memories and shows that although he is a nobody and therefore doesn’t have a heart there is something there that can only be felt if he knows he is helping Roxas or something connected to Roxas (that’s why he only help Roxas,Sora and Kairi) so yeah i got lots of stuff buzzing through my head at the moment

I still keep hearing people say Nobodies have emotions, but it’s not true. They can’t have real emotions, just the memory of them. (It’s like trying to remember your best or worst memory: You may not be able to recreate that emotion you felt on the spot, but at least you can get an idea from the memory you have.)
You can’t lose your heart twice, but maybe Roxas leaving was like losing his heart again for Axel. Even though Axel didn’t have a heart, he felt something in his chest when he thought that Roxas might be going away. Maybe he was having something like phantom pains. Interestingly, those are often described as burning sensations.
NOT gay, dammit. Stop assuming things! They couldn’t even have a real friendship, it says so right there in the beginning. Sad…

I think the Axel and Roxas freindship’s pretty sweet, but I’m a Namixas and Larxel fan so I don’t see them as “lovers” or whatever.
Anyway, thanks for posting this! Me and my freind were always wondering how Malifecent just came back like that.

It’s hinted in KH2 that because of Roxas’ special uniqueness, as well as his ability to wield Keyblades, that he does indeed have a heart. Even though he’s a Nobody, he’s a Nobody that breaks the rules, or he’s found some loophole.
I believe that Roxas is a special Nobody that either has a heart, or has such a connection with Sora’s heart such that it’s like having one. And also, it makes sense if Roxas is able to share that connection with other Nobodies, such as Axel (and perhaps Sora can, too, to an extent), which makes these feelings of friendship possible.
Being gay myself, I love how it’s so easy to pair up Axel and Roxas. There are SO MANY hints for it in the game, and in this story. Come on, they’re too close to be best friends. Even if it’s one-sided on Axel’s side.
And just a note: pedophilia is when an adult has lust for young, pre-pubescent children. Lust for teenagers has a different name. But I don’t think Axel lusts after teens or younger people…just Roxas in particular. =P

I agree with most of you. They’re really GOOD friends. I know people in real life who act THIS close… but aren’t gay. Is it bad to be REALLY close friends and NOT be assumed as gay? geez. I hate the fact that with the littlest “details”… it CAN be made out to YAOI. Fangirls especially, they’d make a big thing out of it.

I liked this short-story of A n’ R. To bad their isn’t anymore of it. Anywho, I got over the “Axel loves Roxas” thing very fast. Also, I think Axel will be back in KHIII, but as a normal person & not a nobody. Tetsuya Nomura said in a interview that if a person’s heartless & nobody are killed, then that person will come back as a normal person. And as we all know, Axel is one of the most best characters in the game.

Um, what’s so bad about gay guys? o_O; I really have to agree with John at that one.
I’m not sure why people freak out just because others see AkuRoku. Honestly, it’s not difficult, there is a lot of subtext, but you can see them as friends OR lovers. So I don’t get it why it’s so bad if someone think it’s beyond friendship. There are hetero pairings which make A LOT less sense and nobody’s making a fuss about them. Nomura himself said that gender doesn’t matter and didn’t want to state if the relationship between Riku and Sora is beyond friendship… so he’s deliberately leaving space for the fans.
As for the short story… really sweet! I read before that they set Maleficent free, but I didn’t know that it was by accident. And in FM+ Axel also mentioned that they were watching the sunset from the clock tower in Twilight Town on that day when he and Roxas first met. I wonder if it’s the Sea Salt ice-cream again? ;p

o-o You know, there was reasonable doubt in my mind up until now, however the whole watching Roxas as he sleeps and leaning over Roxas completely set off that Axel is gay. ….Although it was pretty nice to see Roxas within the organization. However Xemnas not knowing about Axel’s treachery in Castle Oblivion is quite a shock, since I thought for sure he was the one that ordered Axel to weed out and eliminate the traitors. He obviously needs to spend more time monoriting his members and less time writing his Xemnas Reports.

Okay, weeeee, or however many es are in your name-axel is not Riku’s nobody. First off, Nobodies are only created when someone becomes a heartless-correct me if I’m wrong, but Riku was never turned into a heartless. Second, in the end of Kingdom Hearts 2, Namine and Roxas were saying the were lucky, the got to meet thier original selves, which was rare-so I highly doubt that if Axel really was Riku’s nobody that they would work together in organization 13. Third, nobody’s look atleast slightly similar to thier actual beings-Namine is like a blond Kiari, Roxas looks extremelly like Sora…..meanwhile, Axel looks nothing like Riku. And Fouth, most importantly, all nobodies in the Organization have thier creators original names, the letters mixed up, with a x added. Roxas=Sora, Xemnas=Ansem, so on. Axel-x=ael, which is NOT Riku.

Leon/Squall is 25 in KH and 26 in KH2. His age conflicts with the storyline of FF8 so that’s why my fanfic adjusted the way they characters turned up in KH.
Axel i would say is around 23. He’s definantly an adult.
And about the AkuRoku… I personally think it’s gross especially since Roxas is a minor in the first place and both appear to be completely straight. Is worry an emotion? I dunno.It’s something you actually have to think about doing in the first place.

On the subject of AkuRoku…I dunno, I mean, yes the age gap would usually be considered sick, but consider. Roxas is in an organisation which steals hearts: I really don’t think ‘age of consent’ is a big deal to him. They might not even have that kind of relationship. I think it’s obvious Axel cares deeply for Roxas, but how far that feeling goes, I don’t know.
And as for the no hearts issue, I read a fascinating essay which points out that Axel may hav a heart.
