Dengeki PlayStation Birth By Sleep Article
I apologize about my recent lack of activity. Instead of plaguing you about my troubles in this post, I’ll post it somewhere else.
The December 2009 issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine has included an article on the upcoming Kingdom Hearts game for the PlayStation Portable, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. This article includes previously seen screenshots, as well as information about Enchanted Dominion and the Land of Departure. RPG Land have uploaded scans of the article, and Kingdom Hearts Insider have translated it. Both can be seen below.
The truth behind these mysteries will soon be revealed!
Lots of new information about the story and system have been revealed by these new screenshots and illustrations. They’ve finally decided on a release date, so we’re closing in on finding out what is behind all these mysteries in this new game.
World Guide 1
-Land of Departure-Our heroes’ long grim adventure starts from here.
The story starts in a new original world. Here is where the heroes train in hopes of becoming a Keyblade Master. The latest movie that was shown at TGS09 showed them taking the “Master Qualification Exam”. It was revealed that Master Xehanort watched them take the test, though we’ll have to wait and see how the story will unfold from there.
—–
Master Xehanort [er... the scan cuts off about half of the words, but it’s essentially the same as before. I will guess:]
Master Xehanort is a powerful Keyblade Master, as well as an acquaintance of Master Eraqus. He looks very different from the Xehanort we have seen in previous games. Just who is he?
Master Xehanort is giving advice to someone. Had he been planning something at this time as well?
Vanitas
He is the only apprentice of Master Xehanort, and his name has only just been revealed. In the movie that was shown at TGS09 we were able to see him talking and hear his voice. Just what face is he hiding behind the mask?
—–
He talks about the princesses of light! Where the princesses of light something that people sought after even in the past?
Our three heroes in training This is the world where they start out on. But perhaps the picture shown here is not from the very beginning of the game?
—–
Let’s look take a look at some of the things in the story we’re wondering about!
It’s quite interesting that in this game that the important characters already seem to know each other. We get to see scenes of them all talking before the problems start, and these will be the key that connects the rest of the story together. The things Master Xehanort says also have quite a few connections to previous games in the series.
Point 1 Terra and Master Xehanort
It seems that Terra trusts Master Xehanort. We see that he obeys him, but it seems that in the end he betrays him!? What is Master Xehanort after?Point 2 Ventus and Vanitas
Is it just a coincidence, or is there some connection? We see quite a few scenes with them together. Their names also sound similar. Just what is between the two of them!Point 3 Aqua’s Good Luck Charm
Aqua gives them charms to make sure they’ll see each other again. The charms look just like the one that Kairi made in KH!Point 4 The search begins
The three of them are ordered to go searching for Master Xehanort, but in this scene we don’t see Ventus anywhere. Where could he be?Point 5 What is Ventus doing?
What is Master Eraqus and Aqua looking at? It almost seems as though Ventus is acting violent…—–
From Tetsuya Nomura
Their adventure begins here.Though not all scenes are, most of these screenshots show the prologue to the story, in Land of Departure, where they start their journey. What exactly were Terra and Master Xehanort talking about? What is Ven doing? You’ll have to find out more in the game. Master Eraqus is Ven, Terra and Aqua’s master, and he will have a lot to do with the story. He is a new character for the series, so I’d like you to watch him closely. —–
Master Eraqus
He is a Keyblade Master with three apprentices. We don’t know much about him yet, but he seems like a calm and collected “samurai” type. The armor around his middle and his boots look similar to the other three. Perhaps he can change into armor as well? His keyblade design is rather interesting.
“Now we will be having the Master Qualification Exam.”
The Three Apprentices
Terra
A young man who is always calm and cool even under pressure. He fights with power, and can pack a lot of destruction into one attack.
Ventus
A boy who is curious and has a cheerful personality. He fights with speed, and uses light, quick actions.
Aqua
A serious young woman who both kind and strong. Her style is to fight with magic, so her attacks might be a bit erratic!?
—
System - Let’s look at two new things that have been revealed!
Command Levels - Important for growth of your commands!
Deck Commands, Action Commands, and Shoot Lock Commands all have levels. You can gain CP (Command Points) from defeated enemies which once you’ve gotten enough will raise the levels of your Commands. Levels will effect just how strong your Commands will become.
Set your Commands before battle
CP will be given to all Commands that you have set in your Deck. When your Commands level up it will tell you on the screen. You can also check their growth on the menu screen.Support Abilities - Master your abilities to make them more powerful
Some Deck Commands will also have Support Abilities attached to them. When you set the Command you will gain the effect of the Support Ability, but if you unequip it you will lose the effect. But if you set the Command and get the ability to the highest level, your character will then have that ability mastered, and even if the Command is unequipped the effect of the Support Ability will remain.
Support Abilities will grow by gaining CP. Then you will be able to level them up.
Barrage - A Deck Command. You will draw close to the enemy and hit them with a rapid fire multi-hit attack. If you manage to press the buttons with good timing you gain extra hits.
Strike Raid - A Deck Command. You use the keyblade like a boomarang to attack your enemies. Sora has used the same attack before in the KH series.

Vanitas has his face hidden, so he is even more mysterious than other characters. There is a very important reason that his face is covered, but I can’t tell that yet. I will tell you that you won’t see it until the end of the story. I chose his name first through the meaning I wanted, then when I was looking up words this one also sounded similar to Ventus. So the reason I chose this name was because it felt like he was destined for it.

i think Vanitas and ventus are brothers ^^
on 05 Nov 2009 at 1:17 am 2. master x
would be cool if they were, but as of yet kh isn’t really a game series that has family ties though unfortunately. Although I suppose KH BBS could potentially change all that I suppose and make Ventus and Vanitas brothers, which could be understandable. After all KH BBS is introducing the D-Links, a new type of summoning of characters we have never seen, new worlds and new protagonists/antagonists, etc.
on 05 Nov 2009 at 2:52 pm 3. Sonicspeed
Wow great info Kyo…hope you get your computer working too.
BBS does have a lot of potential for some sort of family ties with the rest of the games or some sort of ties like Roxas, Namine, and Xion had with Sora since it’s a prequel. I think the leveling sounds really interesting for BBS. Hopefully it’s as enjoyable to play as KH and KH2 (speaking of which maybe I should pull out Re: CoM and finally beat it lol).

i wish vetus was my brother ;(
on 05 Nov 2009 at 10:48 pm 5. master x
cuz he’s a curious, friendly blondie?!?! lol wow that both rhymes and it kinda speaks the truth.
but seriously, Ventus I kinda thought would be similar to Sora, especially TN said that would be the case, but with a mix of seriousness as well, and that his storyline would be the most similar to the KH series we know and love. Terra’s I thought would be similar to Riku in Reverse/Rebirth, but with a twist since he is looking for MX and the princesses of heart.
As for Aqua, she apparently is chasing after Terra and Ven so her story I thought would be like that of a cop chasing after suspects (but in this case to try and look after Ven and Terra, not arrest them).
on 06 Nov 2009 at 1:19 am 6. Zaryn
sup. first off master x, you never gave a response to my comment on Nomura’s letter
i kinda wanted to see what you had to say lolz. second, what do you guys think about a Toon Town world in the [possible] KHIII? it’s like Donald, Goofy, and the King’s hometown, right?
complete with Max (goofy’s son) and PJ (Pete’s kid) lol. i think that would be a pretty cool idea. but it wouldn’t really be a battle world, maybe just with alot of minigames and whatnot.
on 06 Nov 2009 at 1:44 am 7. master x
you’re gonna have to be a little more specific Zaryn, nothing personal it’s just I couldn’t tell what you were getting at in that comment. In other words, I don’t really follow what you were trying to say.

do un to others as you would do unto you” will really happen for once and for all
on 06 Nov 2009 at 2:26 am 9. master x
how so?
he’s talking about that giant dead monster Terra was standing on before he walked along with Aqua and Ventus to grab the the three keyblades near the center of the crosspaths of keyblades in Sunset Horizons. To answer that question, it may be a major boss fight, likely second to last boss fight for Terra’s storyline I suppose.

its in japan…. or you could read the translation right? sense your american?
on 12 Nov 2009 at 4:06 am 12. ArtickSkye
Wow…I had a revelation right now…On my own…
I didn’t read an entry on the net or steal this from anyone…
The different ‘keyblade’ trainee’s and wielders, other than Xehanort, are similar to the Drive Forms of Kingdom Hearts 2! =)
Terra has the brute strength, masculinity, and pure offense in nature therefore he fits best for Valor Form.
Aqua’s color obviously being blue, is the intelligent and strategic character that best revolves around the Wisdom Form.
Ven however, is a combination of both, although he lacks patience, reigns over the colors of Yellow and Black…representing the Master Form.
So who better fit to be the Final Form than the Master of all three Keyblade owners…Eraqus[an Anagram of Square{SQUARE-Enix?}].
Anti-Form? Simple, the runt being controlled by Master Xehanort…Vanitas. =)
on 14 Nov 2009 at 6:14 pm 13. nobody13
That’s a great observation, ArtickSkye!
…maybe the three good fairies who gave Sora the Drive clothes had something to do with with the characters of BBS.
Although Nomura confirmed that the reason Sora becomes Anti-Form is because of his heartless transformation in the first game, so maybe it doesn’t mean anything.
But either way that is still really cool!
on 14 Nov 2009 at 11:45 pm 14. master x
I do agree on some of that theory of ArtickSkye’s, but with a minor change in that Ven would technically be in Valor form (not because of the clothing) and Terra be given the Master Form, but because he is INEXPERIENCED as a keyblade wielder and not going to become a keyblade master in this game. just so we all know I’m not cutting this guy/girl down this is of course my own opinion on the matter and that ArtickSkye’s point of view is still valid.
on 15 Nov 2009 at 3:30 am 15. Sonicspeed
haha I didn’t realize that Eraqus was an anagram of Square (which was the original company that made Final Fantasy before merging)
on 15 Nov 2009 at 4:07 am 16. master x
crazy stuff eh? Plus I also finally found out where the name ‘Final Fantasy’ came from after all these years, I know I’m lame noob for that, but I honestly did not know, especially since I just getting into some of the Final Fantasy series in the last 3-4 years I suppose.
on 15 Nov 2009 at 3:15 pm 17. Sonicspeed
I’ve probably heard where it came from but I don’t think i know either lol. I’ve also never played any of the Final Fantasy games. I’m debating getting FFXIII or FFVII (probably wait until they remake that one though).
on 15 Nov 2009 at 3:49 pm 18. master x
I absolutely loved FFXIII, simply because it was one those great games for its time, but it depends on which one you think would be the better deal. Although if its a remake you’re talking about, usually a majority of ppl go after the remake of course for graphics, better quality, etc. etc. etc. although once again it all depends on what works for you.

In 358/2 days, Roxas traveled to various worlds Sora did when he woke up from his deep sleep. In one of the KH2 custscenes as Sora was getting on the train to leave Twilight Town, Hayner asked Sora if they met before. Did Hayner see the resemblance between Roxas and Sora?(In other worlds subcharacters came close to that like Carpet and Genie from Agrabah, and Tinkerbell from Never land)
on 16 Nov 2009 at 5:47 am 20. master x
nah. it was merely hayner randomly asking questions. Besides both Sora and Roxas have the same blue eyes which led Hayner to such a conclusion. I’d think of it in this way: Sora and Roxas have that kind of connection because they both interacted with Hayner, Pence and Olette (even if Roxas only knew them through the Simulated Twilight Town). Since Twilight Town was vaguely connected to this world by Diz (formerly Ansem the Wise) the reality Roxas faced in situation prior to the beginning of KH 2 was running in parallel to the real Twilight Town (note I did not say in sync (ha! N’sync ‘in’ sync) with each other).
on 16 Nov 2009 at 7:59 pm 21. jo
master x have you played kh 358/2 days yet?
you do sometimes meet the three and you talk with them .
thats why hayner thinks to know sora, ya know
on 16 Nov 2009 at 9:31 pm 22. Axel
Roxas has been in the real Twilight Town,he went there in 358/2 days.I wasnt referring to the stimulated Twilight Town.
on 17 Nov 2009 at 1:25 am 23. master x
like I said jo Roxas knew Hayner, Pence and Olette because he had his memory erased by Diz and had new memories replace his old ones of Xion and Axel, Org. XIII, etc. He only talked to Hayner, Pence and Olette outside of the Simulated Twilight Town like once dude, learn your facts. ALL of his time was spent in the Organization excluding “9 days” precisely my good man.
Also the reason that I pointed this out Axel is because that’s sort of the reason that scene was there in KH 2, not as a reference to Kh 358/2 days which wasn’t even in scriptform I should add at the time, but also because of the Simulated TT’s effects on the real Twilight Town. In other words like I pointed out before, Roxas had BARELY any encounters with Hayner, Pence and Olette except a few scenes of watching them run and play and one time when he actually talked to them (which was late in the game too I should add.)
on 17 Nov 2009 at 1:27 am 24. master x
also to add on jo, I have played this game. Like months before the english version came out, did you have a copy before then?
on 17 Nov 2009 at 9:34 pm 25. nobody13
Calm down everyone, its just a game.
on 17 Nov 2009 at 11:43 pm 26. master x
I would also like to add in the spirit of things, yes we all should calm down. I usually tend to write (or type in this case) what I mean, what the facts are, etc. in a nice friendly manner, but my ranting unfortunately does make it seem like I’m mad. If this did give anyone that impression, I apologize, but also take note I rant and rant and rant to explain stuff in the best and easiest way possible.
on 18 Nov 2009 at 1:31 am 27. Axel
Im sorry, but i just cant agree with what u are saying.
on 18 Nov 2009 at 3:23 am 28. master x
agree or disagree, it’s up to you Axel. But I’m just telling you what has been acknowledged and accepted by the Kingdom Hearts community, let alone presented by Square Enix/Disney.
on 18 Nov 2009 at 3:23 am 29. master x
if you wanna consult your idea on this you’d have to take it up with them.
on 18 Nov 2009 at 7:27 am 30. derf0007
venitus or whatever holds his key blade like riku
on 18 Nov 2009 at 2:46 pm 31. master x
that’s Vanitas and yes he does: some speculate they might be connected in some odd way (others rumor reincarnation, but that’s impossible as Riku is already alive during KH BBS, just not involved with the story. A big theory going around is that Vanitas is indeed the Xehanort we all know/love/hate from that scene in KH 2 because Riku had his dark form similar to him and that Vanitas apparently is rumored to be that ‘monster infused with darkness’ MX was ranting about in the tgs 2007 trailer and tgs 2008 along with jump festa 2009 I thought.) or another.
on 18 Nov 2009 at 7:40 pm 32. nobody13
If that theory is true, master x, then it would explain why Vanitas would take adopt the name Xenahort, especially if he had no memory when he was found. Maybe Vanitas, being an apprentice, was a lot like the Riku Replica in that he wanted to please his master and himself, so Master Xenahort would be a prominent figure, like a hero, to him.
It would sort-of be sort of like Xenahort’s Heartless taking on the name Ansem.
on 19 Nov 2009 at 2:33 am 33. master x
big news everyone. a new world has been confirmed for KH BBS! It apparently has Pete in some super hero suit calling himself “Captain Justice” (weird huh :p) Huey, Dewey and Louie along with Minnie Mouse in “Disney Town”, apparently before the construction of the Disney Castle just around their ‘Cornerstone of Light’. It will apparently be like the ‘mini-game’ world of this game sorta like the 100 acrewood was for KH 1 and 2 and will involve apparently race car challenges or something like that.
on 19 Nov 2009 at 4:23 pm 34. Sonicspeed
What no 100 acre wood? I always hated Winnie the Pooh and that music for some reason lol. Just so none of the minigames don’t end up like KH2 Atlantis.
on 19 Nov 2009 at 10:41 pm 35. master x
oh this by far is supposed to be much different from that of KH2 Atlantica and Winnie the Pooh Sonicspeed. Apparently in this world there all sorts of odd challenges that still require some of Terra, Aqua and Ven’s skills and keyblade powers to beat and make progress through this world from what has been rumored. Seriously is this game gonna be great or what? If a mini-game world, supposedly to be the easiest thing in a kh game is requiring some thought and effort to beat you know it has to be worth the wait and the money to buy this, let alone a psp.

How come Xehanorts heartless has a human form?
on 20 Nov 2009 at 1:26 am 37. master x
xehanort had a strong enough heart that his human form would stay present in his heartless and in his nobody (Xemnas) even after he lost his heart to darkness.
