Kingdom Hearts vs. Final Fantasy
Lets start with Kingdom hearts as it’s a staple of this site, and more familiar to the general public.
KINGDOM HEARTS
Kingdom hearts is an action adventure RPG that takes place in the various worlds found in the most memorable disney movies, and cartoons, as well as some original worlds thrown in to spice things up.
In the first game Sora takes the lead role with Donald and Goofy.
Supporting characters are Kairi and Riku, and less important supporting roles are various people from the FF franchise and Disney movies.
The story line while very deep and involving can be described simply as thus. Three inquisitive and curious friends(Sora, Rikku, Kairi) live on an island together and plot to see “The other worlds” using a boat they’ve constructed from rough supplies around the island. The night before the planned leave date fate intervenes and Sora’s world is drug into the darkness by the Heartless.
During the course of this Sora is given the keyblade, and defeats a major heartless, despite this his world is still drug into the darkness and Sora wakes up in a new town. (Traverse?), where he is found by Goofy and Donald.
Goofy and Donald inform Sora that he is the chosen keyblade wielder, and that they need his help to get their king back (Mickey).
Sora, being a nice guy and all, decides to help them out, while searching for his own friends, who were lost when his world was.
Sora traverses the various worlds, sealing them off from the heartless, and making new friends and memory’s all along the way. Eventually Sora does find his friend, but sadly one of them has seemingly been lost to the Darnkess, Rikku, who was tempted with its power.
I won’t go more into the story line as to avoid putting up blatant spoilers.
As for the gameplay of KH1 it can be some what repetitive.
You start off with a kingdom key, and in the beginning it is almost entirley hack and slash.
Though as time progresses Sora gains spells, and abilities which are activated through various play styles, and spells through a quick trigger or option menu.
The game play is entirley in real time, though an option menu is present making long option chains dangerous.
Thats why the quick trigger(Shortcut) is there, to avoid you getting killed because you can’t navigate to the Cure spell faster than that really big heartless over there with the over sized weapon can crush you into the ground with it.
Worlds are navigated freely, and split up into sections with short almost unnoticeable load times in between them.
KINGDOM HEARTS 2
The story for this game starts off in something of a… What? Unless you’ve played what I call KH1.5, or Chain of memories, which was released on the GBA.
You start of as a character named Roxas with three friends, two boys and a girl. You play as Roxas in what would seem to be a several hour long tutorial (1-2 hrs) wondering “Where’s Sora?” the entire time. Roxas starts having weird “Dreams” that don’t seem to belong to him, and then a strange cloaked person who could appear to have stopped time approaches you, and asks you if you know who you are, if your coming back.. This is when you get the Keyblade. You fight off the “Strange” enemies and look deeper into this mystery. At this point your thinking there will be no Sora, wondering why he was on the cover in the first place.
But fear not, after taking down several more strange enemies (Which your probably yelling at the T.V. screen going, “THEY’RE HEARTLESS!!” and being dead wrong every time the information screen pops up) and a boss you discover that Sora is in fact still alive.
Soon gameplay takes over with Sora and the story continues.
As far as combat and gameplay in this game is concerned it’s roughly the same as in the first, with a few fun additions.
The most noticeable, and quickly found is the reaction command, used with Triangle when certain conditions with enemies is met.
These conditions, and what actually happens when you hit triangle changes whit different enemies and bosses.
The second, and most drastic new addition is the Drive gauge, and form, though this element of gameplay doesn’t come in until later on, after becoming Sora.
This element of the game also evolves.
You get different forms as time progresses.
Also, this game has a lot more skills to use, leaving with a larger variety of gameplay, making it feel far less hack and slash.
This also makes it more useful for having skill, than in the prior game.
THE VERY BASIC JIST OF EVERY FINAL FANTASY GAME (EVER!)
Final Fantasy games, while in story and exact character is different in every game there is one big noticeable underlying plot for each game.
Something very dangerous is threatening the ENTIRE population of the world, and in one way or another, you, as the protagonist set out to stop it.
Along the way you will meet various like minded people who conveniently use a different kind of weapon from you, and oddly enough from everyone else you meet.
You will meet a theif, a Swordsman, A person with some kind of range, A white mage with summoning capabilities, and a Black mage.
You almost always play something of a powered up Red mage.
Kinda odd, how ironic huh?
In any case Early games had something of a Zelda like world, until the concept of the world map was introduced.
Then, we were presented with open areas, like in FFX. We no longer traversed the world map either, we flew on an Airship to where we wanted to go, and this method of transportation is still present even in the most recent FFXII.
(The world of FFXI is completely open, you can only access Airships from 4 areas total {not counting Kazham?})
The combat system was, young, until FFX-2.
You would enter a random battle from traveling in an area outside of towns or city’s(Peace zones). Such as a field, forest or dessert (Battle zones).
Once in an actual battle you would stand parallel from your enemy and take turns executing various commands all of which could be found in your menu.
This would continue until one of your Hp reached 0.
Your own, and you’d get a Game over and have to continue from you last save.
The enemies and you’d be presented with an award page, in which you would find yourself being utterly confused that the ridiculously over sized rabbit creature you just killed was carrying chain mail, a fire enchanted sword, and 82 gil.
Whats a rabbit doing with these things, honestly no one knows.
In FFX-2, we see the frst variation in the battle system. Though still turn based it’s now Real Time. Based on which weapon your using(The dress sphere let you change the job of any of your characters.)
You would have a gauge that would have to re-charge after each time you attack or use a spell. The time it took to re-charge changed depending on your weapon, and/or skill you used.
FFXI introduced the first entirely real Time battle system, and also got rid of random battles. Also allowing you to control your characters movement while in battle.
FXII Improved, but keeps the same essential battle system FFXI has.
FFX-2 is the very first “True sequel” in the franchise.
–comparing and contrasting the two games.–
Now, it’s obvious that FF, and KH are two very different games, but they do share a few very important things.
Number one being that the KH series is a joint effort between Square Enix and Disney, resulting in some of FF’s most memorable characters having and appearance, or own story line, and position in the game.
As far as actual Game play similarities go, there are none.
KH and FF are completely different games, and really shouldn’t be lumped in together in one pile.
KH, is very different from FF in one element.
This is very important so pay attention.
KH is several small stories, to tell one.
FF is several small stories, to each their own.
While it if true the FF gives you new characters to run with in each games that is because each story is not related to each other. They don’t share the same planet, the same worlds, characters, plotlines, themes.
The only thing they do share is a like universe, and the title Final fantasy.
Kingdom hearts on the other hand is a single, deep story with many side storys to be told, that all relate to one main story line. Every time you witness a different or new story you can take that, fit it somewhere chronologically with the main story, and see how it relates.
CONCLUSION…
This, is why (It’s racking our bodies with pain, and filling our hearts with doubt!)(Sorry, had to say it.. Bonus points if you know why I said it)
We are not done with Sora, but this is also why it’s safe for him to not be in a certain game.
This is all one story line, which guarantee’s Sora’s place within it, but at the same time a different part of the story needs to be told, so that we can understand new parts.
If something comes out, and we aren’t Sora, then thats fine, because we’re not done with him, we’re just learning something new.
Rest assured hat no matter what happens, and who’s shoes the game puts us in, we’re still playing the same story line as we were, and will not ever be at a loss for a familiar face.
Thanks to KingdomHearts3.net reader Kahou for this submission!

Based on the conclusion, I would say that that is entirely true because of the story plots that had been missing inside of the Kingdom Hearts games. I for one have not played any Final Fantasy games, of course, but I am familiar with FFX which I didn’t beat but played. Of course, that is true for FF having different stories said from others and all.
Like Sora from KH, his story is told throughout the game KH1, COM, and 2. It’s all actually focused on him entirely, considering that it was all based on his dreams. And on FF, I wouldn’t be too sure, but from what I have played so far, I would agree with the stories set to different characters’ point of view.
I would also conclude the fact that they are entirely different games, thus setting us into a different course of action towards the Final Fantasy series and, if maybe more games would be made, the Kingdom Hearts series.
So I would agree to this forum as to not bring up Sora again, cause we’ve already known his actions from the story. All we want to see now is the new faces brought to the game that we had seen from the secret ending video, and many other plots that we haven’t entirely been hooked to, like Riku’s story, King Mickey’s, Diz, and all those actual stories that haven’t been shown for a while.
So they might as well try to bring up something about the other stories, cause we wouldn’t know what would come up soon. Or maybe it’s just that they’re leaving cliffhangers of some sort.
Who would know? But the way Tetsuya Nomura put it, the game, KH3, will NOT be a sequel, but somewhat like a next series for KH3. So I would doubt that they wouldn’t change the whole sequence but just to render in some secretly-stored stories to know the actual KH history.

Well I don’t really judge a game by its game play but I can tell you one thing.
Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy are very much so connected by their art work. For example the sky and character designs are some what similar. Both games also have movie openings, endings and sometimes a bonus ending.
The story line of both game series are beautiful and well done ,so is the music. The composers have done a fabulous job.
When it comes to judging what game is better I say that they both win.
_____________
some extra info on final fantasy
FFX and FFX-2 is connected with Final Fantasy 7. If any final fantasy x-2 Fan remembers the little boy genius Shinra (that took care of technical stuff on the Gullwings airship and created the Dress spheres) said (once they recovered Yuna from the Farplane depths) that they could make a power source from planets life force that they found large supplies of in the farplane and deep below it.
( i am not one to tell you of final fantasy 7 because i have never played it. I have only seen Advent Children.)oh! And the energy co. that produced energy that was supplied from the planet was called Shinra. I still have not discovered any other connections for other final fantasy games.

But I suppose when it comes to keeping up with its own story Kingdom Hearts Beats Final Fantasy. Anyway In this forum I don’t think that Final Fantasy would have a fair fight.

I can’t wait to find out what characters from FF that Kingdom Hearts plans to introduce. There are still plenty to choose from. Vincent, Locke, Cecil, Shadow, Barret, Reno, Red XIII, Zidane, Balthier, Vaan, Bausch, maybe even characters from the upcoming FFXIII. THe possibilities are endless. I can almost guarantee than we’ll see either Vincent, Red XIII, or Barret since FF7 has more characters in KH than any other. Imagine fighting alongside any of those characters or other favorites against nobodies, heartless, and the rumored “souless” enemies. I heard that FFXIII gameplay is going to be similar to KH in that it’s going to be a real-time rpg instead of the traditional turn-based system. I think we can expect a lot of announcements in September from SquareEnix regarding both FF and KH.

Sure wa machigatteru omou naa.. FF is one of the best sold game ever, well KH is good and all but people makes the decision what game is better so for me KH is better than FF because, KH has the FF chars too. “LOL”
well if though I love FF and KH
on 22 Aug 2007 at 12:50 pm 32. Hustle
Alright. I love the FF series and I love the KH series but being unbiased since I adore both of these game series KH is definatly the better of the two because of the fact that it is one storyline with many different side stories. FF never gets old but if ya look at it with your eyes squinting and your head tilted to the left a little it has a small resemblance to grand theft auto series except without the gayness. Just my opinion though. To each their own. If anything at least most will agree that Kingdom Hearts has to be in the top 2 of greatest stories… ever. the end.
on 22 Aug 2007 at 5:24 pm 33. Tazimus Prime
I like Kingdom Hearts and all, but to say it is one of the top two greatest strories is pushing it. It’s good story, but I wouldn’t say it is one of the greatest.

OK.
I’m not that great a fan of FF, but I DO LIKE IT.
It’s just that…well…I like Kingdom Hearts MORE.
If not for the great plot, amazing places, astounding characters, Roxas, Oblivion, and Oathkeeper, maybe Kingdom Hearts II has no impact in my heart.
But, the fact is, IT HAS.

in my opinion FF is betta than kingdom hearts because FF is the very lifeline of the KH series, put it this way, half the KH world is FF chars and so on so without the FF chars init it would be 1 very crap disney-based game that only gays would buy. Dont get me wrong though i still worship kingdom hearts and love it

final fantasy is one of the greatest legacies but kingdom hearts digs deep on a youths emotions and imaginations. therefore i will forever fiend kh!!!!

You’re terribly biased and REALLY don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to Final Fantasy. FFX-2’s battle system Real-Time Active Battle was first introduced in FFIV, yes, that’s like a million years ago, so don’t go saying that FFX-2 was the first time they put in somethnig new, because you’re completely wrong. KH is a fun game but the storylines in FF are very complex and interesting and KH’s storyline can not even compare. Also the Disney things are starting to look EXTREMELY out of place, and it’s getting ridiculous. The final mix ending where Mickey Mouse shows up at the end.. That’s freaking lame I’m sorry. You see this epic, realistic battle that’s beautiful and emotional, and then you see Mickey Mouse.. Buzz kill.
on 03 Sep 2007 at 3:27 pm 38. Kaze
There is some room for arugement here, about the dominance of FF and/or KH as “best story”.
Each FF game has had it’s own plot and little side stories which may some time link to the main storyline, or sometimes not. On this note, every story in an FF game has its significance, either retelling the story of one character, or the story of a country, a nation, maybe even a world. What was said about it having one cynical storyline is true: The gist of every FF is that you play a character that has the weight of the world placed on his shoulder, and will meet like-minded people along his journey that will accompany him towards the very end. This has not changed over the years of FF production (though the storyline becomes more involved with the characters than the saving the world). In fact, this is one of the pillars which make FF, FF. If not for the fact that we have this basic principle for the storyline, I may not even know it’s an FF title. Also, the battle system has adapted a traditional RPG system, where it is turn based to attack the enemy. Still, throughout all the years of FF, the battle system has been tweaked here and there, giving players a new feel and a new feature to play with, while many others barely give the fundementals of this system.
Now moving on the KH. While KH may have an “inter-connected” story, it also has the feature of having many side stories within the canon story itself. In my opinion, the statement that “all little stories are told to tell the one big main story” only holds true for the first installment. If I have ever seen “out of whack” from any main storyline, it is when I played KH II. Yet in the way that all KH stories in KH I interconnect, does not vary very far from the traditional story telling of FF. Does it not feel abit cynical as well? Playing the role of a “chosen one” bestowed special power to save the world (in this case, all worlds)? In essence, KH’s storyline is no more the inspiring than any FF I have played, save for the introduction of the Keyblade and its past.
I will admit that KH’s battle system is one of the most unique that I have ever seen. It is true, and I believe this will be the KH trademark throughout all games. It definitely beats the FF battle system by a long run.
Which of the two is better is entirely up to personal preference. I would go with KH, due to the innovating theory of its keyblade, nobodies, and all the promise I see in KH III. If not for this one thing that gives it such philosophical value, I would say they are on standard with FF.
STILL, both games suffer the SAME disease: Recline in quality with the addition to the series. I am sure MANY will agree with me FF hit its peak at FF7; and any that is properly equiped to make judgement can tell that the emotional quality of KH I is far superior to that of KH II. It only remains to be seen how long will these game designers take to either rise from the pit, or bury themselves in it.

FF VII was definately a peak. But it wasn’t followed by a steady decline. The FF’s before and after VII were, in my opinion, about the same. FF VII was just a particularly good installment (and should, in my opinion, be updated to PS3 graphics someday, because then I might actually finish it). As for Kingdom Hearts, there was definately a greater story being told in each world in the second game, more so if I recall than in the first. The Nobodies and Pete (would’ve been better off as Rasputin from Anastasia, I think) were constantly interfering, breaking down walls, ecspecially in the second half of the game.
And the reason Kingdom Hearts has philosophical value is because the whole story isn’t told in one game. In every FF the story is told and finished in one game, all mysteries are solved. The world might be interesting or not, but it doesn’t matter because now it’s history (Unless you count the bane of FF’s existence, FF X-2, the programmers of which probably intentionally sabotaged so as to make sure fans never, EVER demanded a true sequel again). That philosophical value brought about by a living world, as well as the theoretical value brought about by the living characters within it, are why I prefer Kingdom Hearts. Well, that and because I’ve been with Kingdom Hearts since the beginning, whereas I picked up the thread of FF at VII (or VIII, if you go by which games I actually got decently close to beating).

i think kindgom hearts has sort of locked itself with sora, alot of fans who dont really get it will be upset if sora suddenly leaves the series, i love both of the games but reading through the comments realised that ff is sort of repetitive, i like ff better though, i love all the characters in it and i dont really mind that it is repetitive as long as they keep making good characters, i cant compare these games though. i like them both, roxas was my favourite in kh and Vivi or zidane in FF

Ok here’s my opinion:
I think Kingdom Hearts is probably the most surprising game ever made. Disney + Square = What the hell?? Its storyline is also very unique, what with the keyblade and all. In a way it is better then FF because it IS final fantasy, you even have some FF plots going on in it, ex. Cloud, Auron (this is my story, and YOU’RE NOT PART OF IT). While FF also has good stories, it can’t be better then KH because of how unique it is. So KH wins in story.
Now for the battle system. The KH battle system sucks. There is WAY too much buttonmashing. I know, I know there’s magic, but what’s the point in using it 90% of the time other then to heal. It just gets repetitive, especially KH2 since it is so frikin easy and Sora is like a god with all his super sayan evolved form steroid attacks. At least the first one was a challenging buttonmasher. CoM had probably the best battle system, since there was, you know strategy involved. FF has a great system, the materia in 7, the spere grid in 10, so many choices… until 12 ruined it. I hate that battle system SO MUCH! Pick action or timebased, not both. So FF wins in battle system.
As far as the rest of gameplay goes, they are about even. FF has a lot more places to explore and things to find, but how can you compete with the gummi ship?
In conclusion, fix the dam battle system and KH will be better.

I have to admit, at first I really didn’t like the idea of KH(what was so appealing about summoning a cartoon flying elephant?…What a great introduction for the game{my brother told me that FIRST})…Until, of course, I tried it for myself.
Then BOOM! After KH I was already an addicted KH fan. Now I’m really looking forward to other KH games, esecially 358/2 days(such a mouthful) for my DS!!!

Arron…There’s no need to curse…Or shall we settle this with a keyblade duel?

Larxene, Ashen, Kase, let’s take on Arron, EG Sora[who is still arron], and Supa Man in a Keyblade War! KH fans have no need for swearing!

i think both games are cool, but i’m a bigger fan of final fantasty. it was clever how kingdom hearts puts famous ff characters in their game, but that shows no originality. think about it: kingdom hearts would be nothing if it didn’t have sepheroth, cloud, auron etc. all it would be is a bunch of lame disney characters running around. not saying i don’t like the game, but they owe most of their coolness to final fantasty

hey lalala i have o disagree because ff is deffinatly not even close to as good as kh becuase first of all in ff the battle style sucks u dont even do anything and u win it takes no skill and secondly kh has the best story line of like anygame

I agree with Kuhn… FF is the best sold game ever.
( FF IX and X-2 are THE BEST!!!!!! )

Kinda lame (this review) it obviously bend towards KH. The this KH3 . net for a reason I guess. KH battle system was some what lacking that my younger brother who was 6 beat it TwT’ but its good for people like me who doesn’t really care about the challenge (sucks at playing videogames) but play them for the plotline. However go ahead with your blind review (go play FF and you’ll have REAL character background) but I’m sure most people agree with your opinion here (kh site). Ask the same question at a FF site and well lets just find out.
(no offense seriously don’t be angry I’m just saying the first thing popped in my head and I have really bad grammer and spelling issue. Please forgive if you can’t read this lame post TT_TT sorry…)….(DISNEY RULZ!!)

to c2ll: sure the characters in the FF games have development, the story is one of the series best points. but the point is that each game is completely separate for one and another, no connection AT ALL.
but in KH, there are sub-plots, and the like, but it’s all connected into one story. that was the point.

This was one of the most biased articles I have ever read.
This review went in depth about how great and different the KH games are, and then when it started talking about FF, it not only used worse describing adjectives, it talked about it like IT was repetitive.
One thing about FF that makes it good is the fact that we haven’t been playing 12+ games with the same exact story, characters, and such. Though they are all of the same idea, which would make sense because after all they are the same game, they are very, VERY, uniquely different in multiple ways.
This review made FF sound as bad as like a Madden game. Where they are pretty much the exact same thing every year, except with a different roster. Which FF is by no means, anything like that.
Granted this is a KH website, but that doesn’t mean the reviews have to be biased.

i THINK final fantasy is better because kh2 took some parts in final fantasy like squall, yufie, pein and others..they based kh2 from final fantasy………..but i KNOW that kh2 is better because of the nice gameplay and the dramatic story

Everyone has their own opinion >.>’
I can honestly say that I love final fantasy juuust a bit more for it’s in debth storyline, and just beacause it has more ass-kickery XD
People say “Kingdom Hearts is better beacause it has cooler characters/Art/Gameplay” Ect. Well, some of the characters ARE from final fantasy, and the artwork is ALL made by Tetsuya Nomura for the final fantasy AND Kingdom hearts games(well, VII and up… Excluding XI and XII XD). Gameplay is completely different in both games, so it shouldn’t even encorporate on which one is better. Some like the way they play, SOME DON’T
and I will say that this article was COMPLETELY Biased. “The main protagonist is gonna have to kill something dangerous to save the entire population of the world” …Isn’t that what Sora’s doing? Saving the worlds? and “Your party is ALWAYS gonna have a different weapon from you, and your gonna be controlling a “RED MAGE” Type character.” …Donald and Goofy are completely different from me, and Sora has both magic AND brawn… making me a Red Mage type character XD And as for the storylines being repetetive… Have you ever even PLAYED a Final Fantasy Game? I mean C’mon.
Aaaaanyway. I love Final Fantasy beacause the stories are much more in debth and beautiful. Hell, a few of them made me cry >.>’ I Love Kingdom Hearts down to the core, but to compare them is just stupid. Everyones opinion is different, and there will always be clashing. It’s like that stupid thread that asked “Which is better, Squall (Leon) or Cloud” X_X
ugh, I need to lay down XD

oh and LALALA you really ticked me off when you said KH would be nothing but a bunch of disney characters if they didnt have the FF characters.
……OMG……… you just dont get it >_<!!! it wouldnt just be that ok because they could have just as easily made up diffrent characters but they decided to do it with the FF characters instead to make it easier ok!!! aaaaaaaaahhhhhh !!!! FF and KH are not connected to each other at all ok. just because mickey is in KH it dosent mean that any other mickey mouse movie is going to have to be connected to KH ok. GAAAAAAAAWWWWW this is very frustrating!!!
