Scenario Mysteries Interview
TheWertle has struck again! This time with an excellent interview with Tetsuya Nomura from Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ Ultimania called “Scenario Mysteries”, in which he confirms the Enigmatic Soldier’s name as Terra!
In Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+, many mysteries are answered but many new mysteries are also born.
In this version, things relating to additional scenes are included, but during the story there are some questions that pop up, so we’ll see if Nomura can point us in the right direction.
Question: In the original Kingdom Hearts, the King searches for a Keyblade in the Realm of Darkness, but when he meets Ansem the Wise, is the Realm of Light Keyblade he has the one that Sora is currently using?
Nomura: No. The King has the ability to use Keyblades from both the Realms of Darkness and of Light. This is an important point - There isn’t just one Keyblade from each world, but just as many as there are people with qualified hearts.
Question: During the meetings, the members of Organization XIII are sitting in chairs. Is the height of these chairs determined by things like their skills and abilities?
Nomura: No. The height of the chairs is not fixated - They move. That is to say that the height is up to each person. The leader, Xemnas, is always the highest, and to be at the same height as him would give that member a pretty bad feeling, so the other members wouldn’t do that. *Laughs*
Question: At the end of Sora and Riku’s stories in Re: Chain of Memories, Roxas looks back while Hayner and the rest are walking and eating ice-cream, and without seeming to care, Hayner and the others continue walking. Is this because they can’t see Roxas?
Nomura: Well it’s just because they don’t know Roxas that they don’t notice him, not because they can’t see him. At that time, right after Xemnas explains Roxas’ name, Axel says to leave things to him. Then, Roxas seems jealous of how Hayner and the others are enjoying themselves while eating ice-cream, and Axel interprets this as him wanting some ice-cream, so he is obliged to go buy him some.
Question: In the real Twilight Town, didn’t Roxas cross paths with Hayner and the others and make aquaintances with them?
Nomura: I suppose. You can think whatever you want about that.
Question: What triggered Roxas’ separation from the Organization?
Nomura: As he kept having recurring dreams of Sora, someone he didn’t know, he felt he needed to leave the Organization to find out who these people he didn’t know were. As Axel didn’t want him to go, he didn’t tell Sora about Roxas in Castle Oblivion, did he?
Question: In Riku’s ending in Re: Chain of Memories, could you tell us the meaning of the scene where the King and Riku are walking together and Riku suddenly plops down.
Nomura: That’s because Riku realized he couldn’t completely get rid of the Darkness inside of him. The King mentioned in Kingdom Hearts II that as Riku held Xehanort’s Heartless in his heart, he disappeared from the King’s sight. It’s a sort of foreshadowing. In this scene, the King’s face looks worried for a moment because he felt that Riku might eventually no longer be there. Riku headed towards DiZ in order to restore Sora’s memories to normal, but in the end, his departure from the King was so that he wouldn’t show his preparations to use the Darkness.
Question: Could you tell us at what point Riku covered his eyes?
Nomura: When he departed from the King. You don’t know after the scene, but in Riku’s ending in Re: Chain of Memories, when he comes to wherever DiZ is, he’s already covered his eyes.
Question: Please confirm some things about Castle Oblivion. In the additional event “The Truth about the Chamber of Sleep”, you can gather from Xigbar and Zexion’s conversation that Castle Oblivion existed in the Inbetween Realm before the birth of the Organization. The Organization then found it and used it for experiments about memories and to look for the Chamber of Awakening, right?
Nomura: Yes. Since their conversation was about Marluxia’s entry, they discovered the Castle before that. In fact, its use, according to Secret Ansem Report 7, was for only 13 Organization Members. Naminé awoke in Castle Oblivion, but as she and Roxas were born at the same time, half of the Organization moved to the Castle.
Question: In the additional event “To Put an End to Everything”, Sora says “It should have been easy to say thanks to Naminé, but I couldn’t say it”. At this point in time, does Sora remember the things that happened with Naminé?
Nomura: If he remembers, it’s because Naminé’s existence was made possible by Sora, and when Naminé and Roxas return to Kairi and Sora, many things were connected. Since Sora never got to say thanks to Naminé, please think of that as a hint.
Question: In the additional event “Farewell to a Friend”, there’s a scene where Axel tells Roxas “You really do have a heart, don’t you”. What is the actual case here?
Nomura: In this scene, it ends bringing up more mysteries about Roxas, so for the answer, maybe take care to follow your hunches well. It’s also related to Xehanort’s memories, but I can’t give any specifics now.
Question: We’d like to inquire about the new secret movie “Birth By Sleep”. In the new event “The Truth about the Chamber of Sleep”, Xigbar mentions a “group that wields Keyblades”. Is he talking about the 3 armored people in the movie?
Nomura: Yes, Xigbar witnessed them when he was a disciple to Ansem the Wise.
Question: The Lingering Sentiment (Enigmatic Soldier) is the same as the armored youth in the movie, but when he fights Sora he mentions “Aqua” and “Ven”. Are those the names of the other 2?
Nomura: Yes, the blue haired girl is Aqua.
Question: What is the armored youth’s name?
Nomura: His name appeared once in code in the 2006 Tokyo Game Show Promotional Video. Also, Ven is actually a nickname, but his real name is a little bit longer. Sora, Riku, and Kairi’s names can be seen as “Sky, Land, and Sea” respectively. The 3 armored people’s names take the shape of different properties of the world, “Water, Wind, and Earth”.
Statement: Ven looks an awful lot like Roxas…
Nomura: I can’t give any specifics about that. He may just resemble him, and if there is a connection, Sora may be related too. What I can say right now is that these mysteries are all connected to the story.
Question: In the beginning, the armored youth’s eyes are blue, but at the end they change to gold. Is this revealing a change in him?
Nomura: I can’t give specifics about this either… I think everyone’s imaginations are pretty capable so please try and anticipate a lot of things.
Translated by TheWertle. I edited and corrected spelling and grammar.
- In the photo below, it shows a screenshot of the code that flowed across the screen for a moment during the Promotional Video at the Tokyo Game Show 2006. It has been decoded as:
“Master Xehanort’s Avenger, his name is Terra.”
“Not yet awakened, he is connected to those two.”

Ventus, Aqua, and Terra. I had believed the rumors about their names, and they ended up being true. Cool =P
Sora’s story cannot be over. Nomura has made it clear the KH is Sora’s story, and no one else’s.
Take a moment and compare “ASAS: Deep Dive” to “Birth By Sleep.” Just because Sora isn’t shown, doesn’t mean that he won’t be in the 3rd game. And also consider that just because the secret video takes place in the past, doesn’t neccessarily mean that the game will as well. If the video was really anything like “Deep Dive,” then it is merely pressing upon us an event that will be critical in the next installment, be it a prequel or sequel.
on 14 May 2007 at 11:18 pm 29. Ven

I see… it all makes sense now, besides the code. I mean, only TheWertle could find something like that.

Sora’s story can’t be over. Maleficent and Pete are still out there.

i just hope this game turns out alright. Now that Sora’s Saga is over. i wonder how the games gonna turn out. cuz if this is supposed to be a whole new series. will they even keep the Final Fantasy Characters and the Disney characters? maybe they will only keep like..Donald, Goofy and king mickey. and maybe they will get rid of all the disney worlds. see look at it this way..
Kingdom Hearts Chars:(They were made for the game)
Final Fantasy Chars:(Were added in by Square Enix)
Disney Chars:(Pretty much the whole point of kingdom hearts. Also you play in only disney worlds)
but see. sora, kairi, riku, ansem, xehanort, the organization, roxas, namine ECT. Are KH characters. Not disney or FF. So will the new game be more focused on the KH chars?
on 14 May 2007 at 10:41 pm 25. OblivionRiku
That would explain the whole
“Birth by sleep”
“Not yet awakened, he is connected to those tw”o
on 14 May 2007 at 10:39 pm 24. OblivionRiku
Also. Adding on to my last message. When Xemnas *or whoever it was that sat down in the chair* when he sat down and the room lit up. He said something like. If i can remember correctly. “It’s been a while. My friend”
Maybe The organization created these knights? or maybe they were real people b4. And they had Namine erase their memories with her power. So maybe the could use them? But then.. why would Terra hate Xehanort so? Maybe they had namine put his memories back that way?
Who knows why they would make him hate Xehanort but maybe thats part of their plan.
on 14 May 2007 at 10:32 pm 23. OblivionRiku
Ace. You are very right. i was waiting for someone to post this. But yeah. In the cutscene b4 you fight Terra. and even afterwards. What he says shows that he has GREAT hatred towards him. That doesnt mean once they were friends. They could have always been enimies. Ven, Terra and Aqua may be like best friends like, Sora, Riku, And Kairi. Now i belive this whole cutscene was in the past. If i remember correctly. In the KH2 Final Mix+ Trailer *the video that was released in japan showing both CoM RE: and KH2 FM+. At the very end it shows one of the organization members *i beilive was Xemnas* Sitting down in this chair in the room of sleep and awakening. The whole room lit up and it showed a body on the floor. * i beilive…well im almost postive after looking at it carefully a billion times. that the body laying on the floor was one of the Knights.* Now im not sure if this cutscene was b4 you fight Terra or afterward. But im sure the one that was awaken was Terra. but why..if im correct. Would Xemnas bring him back? if we are almost sure that this Bald Man has a connection to Xehanort then. Why? Hmm.
on 14 May 2007 at 10:28 pm 22. vinan123
Terra kinda sounds like a girl’s name to me. Same thing with Sora’s name.
on 14 May 2007 at 10:02 pm 21. Ace of Diamonds
But, Shakespeare, why would Terra seek revenge for a wrong made against Xehanort? We saw in the cutscene with Sora, that Terra expressed a great deal of Hatred for Xehanort. I can’t see how can defend somenone you hate. Terra said that he didn’t choose Xehanort. Terra’s Keyblade was passed onto Sora. Riku gave in to the Darkness, and I guess the Keybalde was essentially suposed to be given to Xehanort. Maybe Terra would hope to fight him one last time. Like I mentioned in my theory. When Xehanort gave into Greed, his heart was overcome by Darkness, and it chnaged him. Kinda like how Peter’s Attitude changed in the Spider-Man movie. He had a new look, and acted differently. Xehanort must’ve pushed awsy his friends, and focused on taking the hearts of the people in the city, and make the Kingdom Hearts we saw in the Secret Ending.

Bear in mind that the last picture was only an idea of how Terra would look from Nomura in mid-2006. The final actual look of Terra was seen in the Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ Secret Ending “Birth By Sleep”, which is where the images from the top are from.
How he looked in 2006 bears no relation anymore. I consider it a blessing as I’ve been saying for the past 5 months that it’s not Sora and that Nomura confirmed it not to be. This is further confirmation still, and hopefully people will actually pay attention now.

Sora995– Ven can’t be Sora. Ven is a new character. Sora is an established character if there ever was one. And we really don’t know anything about any of their personalities…except MAYBE Terra, but we only know what he’s like right before a fight, really.
(Interesting to note (and sudden epiphany) for the people who mentioned that Chaser means ‘one who engraves metal/makes weapons’: Terra says (in this site’s translation): ‘Will you allow me to engrave that into your heart?’)
TheWertle– The slash also makes sense for the extended vowel sound notation…that was the first thing I thought when I compared the translation to the code.
Riku– I would interpret ‘Master Xehanort’s Avenger’ as someone in service to Xehanort, seeking revenge for a wrong comitted against Xehanort. In a moment of drama, you wouldn’t say ‘I am my father’s avenger’ to your enemy if you meant that you wanted to avenge something that your father had done. When I first read it, I perceived it as someone talking to someone else about Terra, like he was giving a report. It felt like ‘Master Xehanort’s Avenger’ was being addressed by the writer, rather than identified as the subject of the sentence.
Granted, when I first looked at it, I was really tired, and I’m not fluent enough in Japanese to know if the original text carries a connotation that infers that ‘ka no na wa TERA’ is ‘Maasuta Zeanooto wo utsumono’, but it just seems like if it was, then it would refer to him more directly (’your name’, rather than ‘his name’). I’d ask my sensei, but she’s on maternity leave, and the guy who babysits our class right now doesn’t have as much experience as she does… ^^;

Whoa! Soembody on this board(I can’t remember who) said that the Enigmatic Soldier’s Name was Terra. I thought he was nuts, but he was right. Well, we now know the E.S. name. Riku is right. By Avenger, he means to take vengeance, or exact satisfaction for. I’m gonna guess that Xehanort & Terra lived together with Ven & Aqua. But like Kairi’s Grandmother’s story said, Light was precious to all in the city, and Xehanort became driven with Greed over the power of Light. With Greed, comes Darkness. Xehanort was overcome by Darkness. He tempted Terra since the two were so close, and became the Keyblade Weilders of Darkness. But, Aqua & Ven’s hearts had a light too powerful to be pierced by Darkness. Xehanort & Terra extracted the Hearts of those who lived into their Kingdom Hearts. Terra realized his wrongdoings, and left Xehanort, following The Way to Dawn back Aqua & Ven. Kinda explains the connection with Riku. So, I guess Either Xehanort was the Old Man, or The Dark Soldier, or maybe he sent them to do away with Terra, Aqua, & Ven. “Master Xehanort’s Avenger, his name is Terra.” “Master”, I guess Xehanort was a ruler, and Terra was his apprentice, or something. So, I just wanna know, how is that Terra looks EXACTLY like Xehanort. There’s gotta be a connection. “Not yet awakened, he is connected to those two.” By those Two, he’s gotta mean Aqua & Ven, and I guess since we saw Terra, he’s already “Awakened.”

Yeah, I tried working out the code last night, but I was really tired…lol
on 14 May 2007 at 12:45 pm 11. Sora995
You know I think Ven Is Sora. SO I think in kh3 U play as Terra as the main character? Ven Does Have the personality of Sora including Roxas. And Terra has the personality of Riku. And Aqua has the personality Of Kairi. So those 3 are in there. Sora,Kairi, and Riku. we have no idea what the letter said. Is it in the future? I bet it is. XD XD XD XD XD

I’m just going to clarify the difference between “Avenge” and “Revenge”. Here’s Dictionary.com’s point:
“Avenge” and “Revenge” both imply to inflict pain or harm in return for pain or harm inflicted on oneself or those persons or causes to which one feels loyalty. The two words were formerly interchangeable, but have been differentiated until they now convey widely diverse ideas. “Avenge” is now restricted to inflicting punishment as an act of retributive justice or as a vindication of propriety - For example, “to avenge a murder by bringing the criminal to trial”. “Revenge” implies inflicting pain or harm to retaliate for real or fancied wrongs; a reflexive pronoun is often used with this verb - For example, “Iago wished to revenge himself upon Othello”.
Now this would suggest that at SOME point, Terra and Xehanort were friends, and that he would want to “avenge” something that Xehanort has had done to him. However, in Final Mix+ we see him portraying his hatred for Xehanort. Either that or he was battling Sora to avenge Xehanort’s separation to Heartless and Nobody, or to avenge Xehanort’s Heartless’ death. He could also have been out to get Ansem the Wise.
He did seem to be suggesting that he thought Sora was Xehanort though, which would mean that possibly he avenged something that happened to Xehanort in the past, but then wanted to take revenge on him for something.
It would kind of explain about Xehanort (if it was him) saying “It’s been awhile, my friend” to whichever of the armored knights it was on that basement floor.
Joy of joys. Many more new mysteries that won’t be answered for ages.
Edit: Apparently “Ven” would have to be short for “Ventus” which means “Wind” in Latin. This is just speculation and not confirmation.

It probably has something to do with the lost two, which I’m starting to think is Aqua and Ven.
on 14 May 2007 at 6:47 am 7. Naminé
Wait WTF? “Master Xehanort’s Avenger, his name is Terra.” and “Not yet awakened, he is connected to those two.” MEANING? someone please explain.
He was Xehanorts avenger? and connected to who two? what? lol after reading those two sayings… i got so lost…
on 14 May 2007 at 6:37 am 6. Naminé
finally, I know the knights name. I also thought ven was a little weird, but now that he mentioned that its a short version of his real name, then that makes sense.
I knew it, Roxas will be mentioned in KH3 or something like that. It has to do with Xehanorts memories, am I wrong?
I’ve heard that the real Keyblader was supposed to be RIKU, but since he’s given into the darkness, it chose Sora. Soo… that’s why in here, Terra is the main weilder, who is supposed to be like a Riku?
OH and since Kairi now has a keyblade from KH2, does that mean in kh3, she will FINALLY fight?

the part in the caption in quotes is what the message decoded to. I’m pretty sure its a substitution code where each letter represents a syllable. I’ll work it out in a second.

XDDD As was I! Finally, the debates come to a close!
However, I wonder…was the code in that picture a code that you had to decode into Japanese and then translate to English? Because it doesn’t look like it works out otherwise. I’m curious about the decoding process on that.

YES! ITS ABOUT TIME NOW PEOPLE CAN STOP THEIR THEYORIES ABOUT HIM BEING SORA OR XEHANORT! TY TY TY! I was getting tired of explaining to people why it couldnt be them. Great job guys! These interveiws get us closer and closer to unwravling this mysterie about these 3 knights!
