Scenario Mysteries Interview
TheWertle has struck again! This time with an excellent interview with Tetsuya Nomura from Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ Ultimania called “Scenario Mysteries”, in which he confirms the Enigmatic Soldier’s name as Terra!
In Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+, many mysteries are answered but many new mysteries are also born.
In this version, things relating to additional scenes are included, but during the story there are some questions that pop up, so we’ll see if Nomura can point us in the right direction.
Question: In the original Kingdom Hearts, the King searches for a Keyblade in the Realm of Darkness, but when he meets Ansem the Wise, is the Realm of Light Keyblade he has the one that Sora is currently using?
Nomura: No. The King has the ability to use Keyblades from both the Realms of Darkness and of Light. This is an important point - There isn’t just one Keyblade from each world, but just as many as there are people with qualified hearts.
Question: During the meetings, the members of Organization XIII are sitting in chairs. Is the height of these chairs determined by things like their skills and abilities?
Nomura: No. The height of the chairs is not fixated - They move. That is to say that the height is up to each person. The leader, Xemnas, is always the highest, and to be at the same height as him would give that member a pretty bad feeling, so the other members wouldn’t do that. *Laughs*
Question: At the end of Sora and Riku’s stories in Re: Chain of Memories, Roxas looks back while Hayner and the rest are walking and eating ice-cream, and without seeming to care, Hayner and the others continue walking. Is this because they can’t see Roxas?
Nomura: Well it’s just because they don’t know Roxas that they don’t notice him, not because they can’t see him. At that time, right after Xemnas explains Roxas’ name, Axel says to leave things to him. Then, Roxas seems jealous of how Hayner and the others are enjoying themselves while eating ice-cream, and Axel interprets this as him wanting some ice-cream, so he is obliged to go buy him some.
Question: In the real Twilight Town, didn’t Roxas cross paths with Hayner and the others and make aquaintances with them?
Nomura: I suppose. You can think whatever you want about that.
Question: What triggered Roxas’ separation from the Organization?
Nomura: As he kept having recurring dreams of Sora, someone he didn’t know, he felt he needed to leave the Organization to find out who these people he didn’t know were. As Axel didn’t want him to go, he didn’t tell Sora about Roxas in Castle Oblivion, did he?
Question: In Riku’s ending in Re: Chain of Memories, could you tell us the meaning of the scene where the King and Riku are walking together and Riku suddenly plops down.
Nomura: That’s because Riku realized he couldn’t completely get rid of the Darkness inside of him. The King mentioned in Kingdom Hearts II that as Riku held Xehanort’s Heartless in his heart, he disappeared from the King’s sight. It’s a sort of foreshadowing. In this scene, the King’s face looks worried for a moment because he felt that Riku might eventually no longer be there. Riku headed towards DiZ in order to restore Sora’s memories to normal, but in the end, his departure from the King was so that he wouldn’t show his preparations to use the Darkness.
Question: Could you tell us at what point Riku covered his eyes?
Nomura: When he departed from the King. You don’t know after the scene, but in Riku’s ending in Re: Chain of Memories, when he comes to wherever DiZ is, he’s already covered his eyes.
Question: Please confirm some things about Castle Oblivion. In the additional event “The Truth about the Chamber of Sleep”, you can gather from Xigbar and Zexion’s conversation that Castle Oblivion existed in the Inbetween Realm before the birth of the Organization. The Organization then found it and used it for experiments about memories and to look for the Chamber of Awakening, right?
Nomura: Yes. Since their conversation was about Marluxia’s entry, they discovered the Castle before that. In fact, its use, according to Secret Ansem Report 7, was for only 13 Organization Members. Naminé awoke in Castle Oblivion, but as she and Roxas were born at the same time, half of the Organization moved to the Castle.
Question: In the additional event “To Put an End to Everything”, Sora says “It should have been easy to say thanks to Naminé, but I couldn’t say it”. At this point in time, does Sora remember the things that happened with Naminé?
Nomura: If he remembers, it’s because Naminé’s existence was made possible by Sora, and when Naminé and Roxas return to Kairi and Sora, many things were connected. Since Sora never got to say thanks to Naminé, please think of that as a hint.
Question: In the additional event “Farewell to a Friend”, there’s a scene where Axel tells Roxas “You really do have a heart, don’t you”. What is the actual case here?
Nomura: In this scene, it ends bringing up more mysteries about Roxas, so for the answer, maybe take care to follow your hunches well. It’s also related to Xehanort’s memories, but I can’t give any specifics now.
Question: We’d like to inquire about the new secret movie “Birth By Sleep”. In the new event “The Truth about the Chamber of Sleep”, Xigbar mentions a “group that wields Keyblades”. Is he talking about the 3 armored people in the movie?
Nomura: Yes, Xigbar witnessed them when he was a disciple to Ansem the Wise.
Question: The Lingering Sentiment (Enigmatic Soldier) is the same as the armored youth in the movie, but when he fights Sora he mentions “Aqua” and “Ven”. Are those the names of the other 2?
Nomura: Yes, the blue haired girl is Aqua.
Question: What is the armored youth’s name?
Nomura: His name appeared once in code in the 2006 Tokyo Game Show Promotional Video. Also, Ven is actually a nickname, but his real name is a little bit longer. Sora, Riku, and Kairi’s names can be seen as “Sky, Land, and Sea” respectively. The 3 armored people’s names take the shape of different properties of the world, “Water, Wind, and Earth”.
Statement: Ven looks an awful lot like Roxas…
Nomura: I can’t give any specifics about that. He may just resemble him, and if there is a connection, Sora may be related too. What I can say right now is that these mysteries are all connected to the story.
Question: In the beginning, the armored youth’s eyes are blue, but at the end they change to gold. Is this revealing a change in him?
Nomura: I can’t give specifics about this either… I think everyone’s imaginations are pretty capable so please try and anticipate a lot of things.
Translated by TheWertle. I edited and corrected spelling and grammar.
- In the photo below, it shows a screenshot of the code that flowed across the screen for a moment during the Promotional Video at the Tokyo Game Show 2006. It has been decoded as:
“Master Xehanort’s Avenger, his name is Terra.”
“Not yet awakened, he is connected to those two.”
Terra

Are you talking about Riku’s sword that later became a keyblade? One, how did he do that and Two, where did Riku get the keyblade that he gave to Kairi?

the other translation is “Fate doesn’t happen by accident, there is necessity”
they seem to mean the same thing so use wich everone you like.

that could be true be cause rikus heartless keyblade had no key chain
on 20 May 2007 at 4:23 am 170. bernaporto
Nomura stated that the sentence “the fate of all occurs not by chance…” anyone know what it means??
on 20 May 2007 at 4:21 am 169. bernaporto
most people say that a keyblade with no keychain is not real.
That would mean the knights aren’t real keyblade wielders but the bald guy is.
on 20 May 2007 at 4:14 am 168. metalzoa17
I got a question for you guys, why does Xehanort’s Riku’s keyblade has an eye on it?
on 20 May 2007 at 4:10 am 167. Mohrphorm
Hmmm…. the chains change the form of the Keyblade. Maybe Sora’s is special, and can change form?
on 20 May 2007 at 4:09 am 166. bernaporto
I’m not really that interested in Xehanort. I just don’t think there is much to think about. In my theory though Xehanort has something very important to do with the keyblade wars he is not any of the characters from the secret ending.
on 20 May 2007 at 4:07 am 165. bernaporto
I really would like to focus more around the new characters than Xehanort.
For example how come the knights keyblades had no keychain??
How come Bald Guys keyblade had a Keychain??
Is Dark Knight a Heartless or not??
I know we can only guess the answers for these questions but lets at least try.
on 20 May 2007 at 3:52 am 164. bernaporto
i’ve explained this alot of times already in diferent posts but ill just say it again.
When a heartless and its coresponding nobody are both destroyed (the heartless is destroyed first) That person comes back to life though no specifics have come up as to how.
on 20 May 2007 at 2:57 am 163. metalzoa17
Also, is Xehanort still alive, if so, how?
on 20 May 2007 at 2:33 am 162. Mohrphorm
“X” is commonly used to represent “null”, or nonexistent. My theory however is that it derives from Xehanort’s name, who basically began the tradition.
on 20 May 2007 at 2:15 am 161. metalzoa17
Like Roxas, it was used to make a different name out of Sora after shuffling around the letters.
on 20 May 2007 at 2:02 am 160. metalzoa17
Here’s my question about organization 13! What’s the meaning of the X in their names?
on 20 May 2007 at 1:53 am 159. Mohrphorm
Maybe, “Xehanort” is a codename for a series of bad guys. The old guy passed the legacy onto Ven…. nah, sounds too dumb. Hmmm….

How could’ve Xehanort banished Ansem the Wise from Radiant Garden? According to the story, Ansem the Wise ruled over Radiant Garden at the time he found Xehanort. Now, Kairi was sent off to Destiny Islands by Xehanort to see if The Keyblade Weilder & Princess of Heart could become connected. Since Sora & Kairi had that special bond, Xehanort, well, Ansem, inhabited Riku’s body because he was succeptible to Darkness, and that Sora’s connection with Kairi was a made of a strong light that couldn’t be stopped. What puzzled me is that if Kairi is a princess then Xehanort, or Ansem the Wise was her father. Ansem I could understand because he ruled over Radiant Garden, but if it was Xehanort that is Kairi’s father, what King is he? If Xehanort was at a young age when he was found, like you said, probably in his teen years, then the only character in the Secret Ending that fits the bill is Ven. He seemed to be the youngest out of everybody. It could be possible that when The Old Man froze Ven, he must’ve erased his memories. When he awoke, he was found by Ansem the Wise with Aqua & Terra nowhere to be found. He remembers the name Xehanort, and calls himself that. I’ll stop there because I’m not to into that theory. If Xehanort was a young man when he was found, maybe it was that Dark Soldier, he looked pretty agile. But Ansem the Wise said he found, XEHANORT. We last saw Aqua, Terra, & Ven when the Secret Ending ended. Something had to have happened.
on 20 May 2007 at 1:10 am 157. Mohrphorm
That seems to make sense. The only thing that could change it is exactly how long ago the ending movie was, but judging by your “youg man” description, you’re right. Unless, other factors change it. Birth by Sleep perhaps?

Alright, now let’s try to fix an age range on Xehanort over the events of the games. (I often do comparisons such as these to narrow down a character’s age when a vague span is given, like, 25-30 for Sephiroth in FFVII.) Now, it’s hard to establish a timeline for when everything in KH happens, since all we have to work with are ages and the fact that one year passes between KH1 and KH2. Not even the Secret Ansem Reports are a reliable source to gauge the passing of time (since he says time does not exist in the Darkness), but here goes…
Xehanort’s Heartless (writing and acting under the name of Ansem, and henceforth referred to as Ansem) sent Kairi to Destiny Islands to test his hypothesis about the connection between the Princesses and the Keyblade (Ansem Report #11).
During the flashback in KH1, Sora and Riku discuss the door in the Secret Place, decide it’s boring, and leave, making mention of Kairi (the new girl) as they leave. They appear to be between six to eight years old (maybe older, since it’s difficult to judge). Anywhere between six to eight years could have passed before Sora’s journey began.
The portrait of Xehanort in Ansem’s Study (why in the world would he keep a portrait of Xehanort in his office? That’s a bit creepy, don’t you think? O,o) shows him in what I would say is his late teens to early twenties. I provided a link in my name to the portrait for convenience. He doesn’t appear to be much older than Cloud or Leon, certainly older than Sora, but much younger than the oldest members of the cast (such as Cid, Ansem the Wise). Secret Ansem Report #1 describes him as a ‘young man’, and he had already been in Radiant Garden for a few years (anywhere from 3 to 5 will be counted as ’some years’ for our purposes; any fewer would surely be called ‘a couple’, and any more would most likely be called ’several’ or ‘many’).
Ven doesn’t look to be much older than 15 or 16, nor does Aqua. If we assume that Terra is the oldest of the Chasers, and also assume that Xehanort was a Chaser, then putting him around 15 or 16 when he was found in Radiant Garden seems like an acceptable estimate.
We’ll start with minimum age first. If Xehanort was found in Radiant Garden at the age of 15, had been in service to Ansem the Wise for three years, banished Ansem the Wise in the same year that Mickey arrived and ordered the apprentices to stop their experiments, wrote the rest of the Ansem Reports in the same year, and that six years passed between when Kairi arrived at Destiny Islands and when Sora’s journey began, then Xehanort, now Ansem, would have been 25.
Maximum age…if he was 16 when he was found and was in service for five years, took another year between banishing Ansem and completing his research up to the point of getting Kairi off to Destiny Islands, and EIGHT years passed before KH1 started, then Xehanort, now Ansem, would have been 30 at the start of Sora’s journey.
A range of 5 years is a rather large margin of error, but I was very generous in the calculations for his absolute maximum age, whereas I tried to cram as much as possible into the shortest span of time for the minimum age. (And if Xehanort was half as brilliant as Ansem the Wise said, he could have easily met the minimum age range timeline, perhaps even done better. After all, he wrote EIGHT Ansem Reports before he was caught, I should think that he could whip out another two relatively quickly, especially after he had knocked Ansem the Wise out of the picture and could focus everything on his research.)
Thus, his maximum age range (as of KH1) is about 25 at the least, and at the very VERY most, 30. A more logical cap on his age would be about 28, though, since I doubt he would take a year between banishing Ansem the Wise and getting around to writing another Ansem Report, and THEN theorizing about the Princesses.
on 20 May 2007 at 12:25 am 155. Shakespeare
Ansem the Wise didn’t /leave/ Radiant Garden, Xehanort banished him (it would seem into the Corridors of Darkness).
Aaand…this post is getting too long. Next up from Shakes will be an approximation on the age of Xehanort, so hold on to your hats, folks, and prepare for a frightening trip on Shakes’s train of thought.
All aboard.
