Tetsuya Nomura interviewed
Firstly, sorry about the slight delay in posting this, as I have been away for the weekend. Here is an interview with Nomura discussing the minor details about the future Kingdom Hearts side-project game. As well as discussing details of the game, I believe we might have a little unofficial confirmation that there will be a Kingdom Hearts 3, which I will discuss after the interview. Here is the interview:
About the new Kingdom Hearts title that will be announced after summer this year (2007), will that be a direct sequel?
Tetsuya Nomura: “Hmm…I’m not sure how much I can say. I’ll start of by saying that it’s not Kingdom Hearts 3.”
So this game will be a side story?
Tetsuya Nomura: “That’s right. My own feelings are that I would like to give Sora a break from large adventures for a little while. So I’m thinking of making the next game’s story focus on other characters.”
So by a little while, do you mean that Sora’s journey from Kingdom Hearts 2 hasn’t finished?
Tetsuya Nomura: “Yes. If you’re talking about the mysteries that started from Kingdom Hearts 1, then those were all revealed. In the ending of Kingdom Hearts II, there was a scene where Sora received a letter from the King; for Sora, I would like you to consider this as a new beginning. The truth is, until the very end, I was considering whether or not to include a scene showing them setting off on a journey after reading the letter.”
So, let’s talk about this new story, which doesn’t have Sora as the main character. What sort of story will it be?
Tetsuya Nomura: “Well, I need to start with the story depicted in a Birth by Sleep. Aside from that, there’s the story of how the King found his keyblade in the world of darkness and other things like that. Myself, one of the things I most want to do is to give Roxas more of a role to play. I think it would be interesting to flesh out more of the year he spent between his birth and disappearance. Or making Riku the main character, and writing about his desperate fight while Sora was asleep, and things like that. You get the impression that Riku summoned Roxas to a place of shadows, and that Riku is a master of shadows, so I would like to give him more exploration in the game.”
Will there be anything different in the game system?
Tetsuya Nomura: “I’d like to try something a little different to the previous games in the KH series. I’m not just talking about the next game, more about the next project, so I can’t say that it will just be one game (laughs). For the Kingdom Hearts series, being made with our company and Disney, both companies have things in mind that we would like to make reality, so there’s always at least two things we want to do.”
What platform does it look like the next game will be released on?
Tetsuya Nomura: “Hmm… Probably a hand-held platform. Right now we’re working on titles for the PSP (FFVII Crisis Core), Nintendo DS (This Wonderful World) and for mobile phones (MONOTONE), so I wouldn’t be surprised if it were on any of those platforms.”
Is there any chance that this game may be released on multiple platforms?
Tetsuya Nomura: “We haven’t considered that in the development. If possible, I would like to make a system that suits the platform. But in contrast, in terms of ideas, I would want ideas that could be released on any platform.”
The more I hear about the next game, the more exciting it sounds, but for the fans the first thing to do is to see KH2 Final Mix’s secret movie isn’t it?
Tetsuya Nomura: “Yes. I’m worried that we made the conditions for getting the secret movie too hard, but through reading this guide, I hope the readers will be able to see the secret movie. Finding a way to defeat (the new boss) is tough, but I’ve seen it done, so I know it’s not impossible (laughs). If you’re able to see the new secret movie and turn your thoughts to the next Kingdom Hearts, I’d be very happy.”

So, perhaps not too much new information, but I think we can take Nomura’s comment that I have highlighted above where he says he would like Sora to have a break from large adventures can be taken to indicate that there will be a Kingdom Hearts III at some point in the future. He doesn’t say he wants to change the format forever, simply that Sora should have a break. I may be foolish, but I take this as a bit of a slip, and that there will more likely than ever, be a Kingdom Hearts 3.

Well all I can say is that I will be VERY DISAPOINTED if it comes out on a handheld platform. I can see this just being another CoM, and if it turns out it is, I won’t be buying it (I didn’t buy CoM either). If they make this for the psp or ds they will be making a HUGE MISTAKE. There has not been one game that has done well from moving from ps2 to handheld platforms, so I don’t why they would even consider it. Let’s just hope that they are still saving the good ideas and story lines for the “real” game when they decide to release one for the ps2 or ps3.

Imagine what they could do on a PSP, and the Graphs on the SP didnt look like PS2, they were good for what it was at the time.. PSP has alot more potental than teh DS, well the games show that for them selvs really.

now hang on. the DS has some damn good graphics. i think it would be a VERY good thng for it to be released on a handheld. for one it is cheaper, and did you not see the cutscenes from Com, they looked just like the PS2, imagine what they could do with the DS. and the DS stylus could bring some interesting possibilities to the mix

I personaly believe that KH3 should be on a handheld platform, like the psp. It gives others who don’t have a ps2 a chance to understand what happens in the games. Also, since psp has the ability to connect to the ps3 and do stuff, i believe there will also be a ps3 version.

So the game with the chasers on it…is for hand-held platform? That has got the be THE worst decision they could have made, fighting stlyes and graphics are incredibly poor on hand-helds, watching “birth by sleep” everyone thought this game was going to be big, exciting and dramatic. I think hand-held is going to ruin it. I am feeling gutted right now.

so let me get this straight…it is pretty much clearly said, that it’s going to be handheld. so why are there still people saying sh*t like “KH3 is coming for Wii!”? but damn it…i hoped for a “big” one so bad. how long will i have to wait? this is killing me! i need to know how it goes on! i develepod at least 50 continuations for the story! (at least i remember 50 of them). i hope it will never end. it’s like…the best book EVER just interactive!

Well Kingdom hearts 3 is most likely going to be multiplayer and have you able to play in some parts as different characters i heard that there was another interview with Nomura but i didnt find the hwole interview it said Nomura was hoping to mix magic spells together for more variety but he said it had to be taken out due to small issues with the system.
He also said the keyblade stats did not impact on the game very much.
He also wanted to add more flare to high jump.
That stuff probably will be in the next game thats not the full interview thats just a part of it that i found.

y r u guys complaining about the new kh game for psp/DS? u can trade in 5 GAMES and GET A PSP from EBGAMES,trade in 10 games and u could get a wii or ps3 so for me it doesn’t matter what system the kh game comes out on

The idea of a side story sounds like a lot of fun, especially if it’s going to be from another characters’ perspective (^-^) I’d like to play through what Riku had to do as Sora slept or even as Roxas. However, the thought of playing such a game on a handheld is turning off the fun and excited feeling of playing a new KH game. At very least, PS2 would be the desired game station to play on (for me, at least) Or PS3, since the graphics would be awesome. All in all it sounds good, even better since it sounds like a KH3 game will come later (^o^)v But I really don’t like the thought of this game being handheld.

I’ve seen the secret movie of KHII and I must say, I’ve never thought that there would be a complete new story.
They’ve got the letter in the end of KHII, so why don’t you still finish this topic?
Sora is needed by King Mickey! And he will fight against the darkness as always!
When KHIII is finished then you can make a final mix again =) (germany will never get… like we won’t get the other final mixes)=(

A handheld? Really, Nomura? Why must you guys suddenly insist on putting your best games on yesterday’s consoles? Nobody really wants to play such a rockstar title that isn’t on at least the PS2.

I really want it to be on PS2 because bascially I won’t be able to play it, or on Nintendo Ds, but it’s just not the same without it on a console… the story is lost, and the graphics will mean nothing on a mini screen. Sorry, but Kingdom Hearts should stay on PS2 and that is that.

I actually think it’s cool that Riku, or Roxas might be the main charactor, but i really do hope it is riku!lol. But its not like Soras adventure is ova, cause Sora IS goin to come back!

And u know what have I realized that price of PS3 will be droped a lot when KH3 realese. So I hope everything will be fine but I afraid that will happen same thing when I bought PS2 because it was cheap but PS3 came then and I have this problem!!! I hope PS4 will not come when I buy PS3 lol!!!!!

You shouldn’t complain about the price of a PS3, the cost to manufacture it is nearly US$840.35 and at US$599/C$659 they lose approximately $250 when it first came out but since the cost reduction on manufacturing some of the hardware recently, they only lose $94 on each system. They still lose money.
And if you’re confused about the next KH games just read my comment on #32 bellow, it should explain what’s going on with the next KH games in development.

Here are my theories on the new game development:
What’s going to happen in the next Kingdom Hearts game?
Roxas and Riku are going to have their own side stories. Mickey probably will have a side story as well; my reasons for thinking this are that Disney and SquareEnix have their own list of expectations for the upcoming games and Mickey is a large symbol of Disney. They are both great companies and the games they make should be great.
Now will the side quests of these three characters be on one game? Most likely they will make all the side stories fit into one game. It wouldn’t be logical to put them on separate games.
Will the game be on the PSP or DS?
Well, the PS has been losing a lot of their exclusives lately and depending on what they want to do with the game determines what system it will be on. A PSP has a big screen and has many capabilities and it would be a way of keeping the KH series as a PS exclusive. A DS has many games at it’s disposal considering it can play GBA games and DS games so you can play KH:CoM on it. It also has the online play as a PSP, dual screens instead of one screen and one of the screens being a touch screen. Since you can play KH:CoM and the new KH game, (if it comes out on this system) it would be perfect. So, the most logical system would be the DS unless they are looking for people to buy the PSP but that would just be stupid since they have the PS3 out now.
Will Sora’s game continue, when will it come out and will it be on the PS3?
YES it will be on the PS3, like I said, PS is losing many of its exclusive games and I don’t think they’d be giving up KH that quickly especially since they got their shiny PS3. Yes, Sora’s story will probably continue in the future, considering it’s development it might come out in 2014 at the latest. (Almost certainly it’ll come out before then) You have to keep in mind that SquareEnix has a lot of projects on their hand, but nothing they can’t handle right?
